I had a lot of ideas on based on the theme of climate change. I am noting some of my favourites here.

An alien explorer attempts to piece together human culture from what we have left behind. (This idea would be very narration heavy. Would likely end up a walking simulator. I don't think this is what I would want to be doing for this project.)

A simulation or idle game in which you attempt to speed up climate change as quickly as possible. (This has almost no overlap with my previous experience in game development.)

Attempt to design a species that can survive an the extreme environments likely to be produced by climate change. (Too complicated for the timeframe.)

Play as a doctor attempting to treat a plague that is turning people to stone. Treating the illness proves impossible until they start to investigate the environments that their patients are living in. (I like this concept the most but struggled to come up with any gameplay ideas for it.)

I like the last concept but don't know how to turn it into a game. It would be better suited to a short graphic novel or animation.

Further thought about this lead me to the slightly different concept of playing as a healer attempting to help nature spirits corrupted by people who wish to use them to their own ends. This would allow combat to become a core part of gameplay (corrupted spirits becoming enemies). For this, my initial idea is to focus combat on well timed dodges followed by spellcasting. Making a dodge mechanic that is fun and basic enemy AI would be the goal of my first prototype.

Will look at examples in other games but first games that come to mind are Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild (flurry rush rewards last minute dodges with the chance to attack an enemy repeatedly) and Kid Icarus: Uprising (which incentivises the player to allow attacks to get very close before dodging, often allowing the player to dodge under attacks that would not be escaped by simply running away).

Weekly Reflect

Okay! I didn't get the animation short done like I wanted to, but! It's okay because it was a bit ambitious when I realized how many background shots were inside a house and uhhh I hate doing interiors.

More designs being worked on, I might try to toy with some designs for Margot because honestly, her character looks are feeling a bit stale to me, she needs some love.

I'm going to sit down and try to write out some manageable goals for next week and see where that gets us. Stay tuned for updates!

Project Moon seems to actively avoid saying anything at all about gender (which in itself does say something- they seem to write their characters blind of what gender they're going to be and maybe even flip a coin to decide, in the end saying "we're all people and anyone can be in this social position and have these personality traits", but that's not the point here) but it was still awesome of them to make one of the six female characters in the main cast a mother figure anyway- which sounds sarcastic but I promise it isn't, because that character happens to be the violent chainsmoker who speaks in esoteric acronyms and refuses to explain them and only enjoys herself when she gets to engage in her favorite form of art (murdering people). that's the mom. and they practically tell us “she loves her child like a defensive spider mother who will hunt for food for her babies and devour anyone who tries to squash her kids” through giving her some form of Spider Bud EGO three times.

the reason this is better than no mothers at all is because instead of having to explain why [x] character (Rodya mostly) is not at all a mother figure and having to elaborate on Project Moon’s ideals and the way they write their characters you can go “actually you’re wrong the only milf on the bus is Ryōshū” and also because it subverts expectations so much more than if there just wasn’t any moms. with a complete absence you could still have the “ideal” mother in your head imagining that she could exist in the cast, but instead we have this

the title of the new event is “with scarred/wounded hands, we are” (rough translation) while mizu5 event’s name was “where does the path of thorns go?” and and ena’s new card for the event is titled “even if i’m covered in scars” and im crying like. hermit searcher found her hermit. ena went through the path of thorns, hurting her hands making way to get to mizuki. to reach her. to bathe her in her warm light. GODDDDDD
